The City

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand.

The average elevation of the province is 580 m. The north of the province belongs to the so-called Golden Triangle, at which the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge - an area which was very unsafe because of the drug smuggling across the borders. The Mekong river forms the boundary with Laos, the Mae Sai and Ruak River to Myanmar. Through the town of Chiang Rai itself flows the Kok River. While the eastern part of the province is relatively flat river plains, the western part consists of the mountainous terrain of the Hills of Northern Thailand.

The University

Mae Fah Luang University, situated in the province of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, is named the mother of the current king of Thailand. It is an autonomous public university. Initially it offered only two majors, (English being one of them). It now offers many more, including Business Chinese, Agro-Industry, and Traditional Thai Medicine.

The beautiful and extensive campus is situated in Tambon Tasood, Mueang District and consists mainly of hills with only a small area of plain.

The university strives to become an international institution, using English as the primary medium of instruction. However, this is hindered by the sometimes inadequate language ability of the Thai teaching staff, and also by that of the students.
