Together with our project partner, the Platform Asyl, we were allowed to ask ourselves the exciting question of what effects the workshops offered for children and young people have.
THE CHALLENGE
In 2023, the rising number of refugees necessitates urgent action to address their challenges. In Austria, refugees face daily racism and prejudice. To promote understanding and peaceful coexistence, our project partner conducts school workshops. But what impact do the workshops have on children and young people?
OUTCOMES
In the interviews with one teacher and two workshop leaders, one thing in particular stands out. The prior knowledge of the students is strongly dependent on the teacher. Many teachers themselves are not sufficiently informed to deal with problems concerning origin and skin color in the classroom. In the course of the survey of students, further insights were gained. 91% of the respondents stated that they themselves (16%) had been discriminated against on the basis of skin color or origin or that they had seen this with others (75%). Even though the students felt better informed after the workshop, no change in behavior could be detected. In order to continuously improve the workshops, an evaluation tool for the platform Asylum was created based on the survey of the students.
