TEACHING & LEARNING
Games for Learning and Instruction
We learn through games since our childhood. We learn language arts with “Scrabble”, math with “Uno”, strategic thinking with Chess, and social studies with “Monopoly".We enjoy learning through games and there is one main reason for it: GAMES ARE FUN!
Also in higher education, game is considered to be a powerful tool to gain various learning goals! They help you to engage and motivate your audience, and reach your learning goals in a completely unusual and entertaining way.
You can use game for example as a/an:
ice-breaker
Introduction to the topic / problem statement
Activation of the previous knowledge on the topic
Checkpoint for understanding of the topic / task
etc.
Humber Centre for Teaching & Learning listed some learning Games, which can be easily integrated in your lessons plan and help you to achieve the defined learning goals.
Here are just several game scenarios:
Game 1: Broken Prototype (Goal: to demonstrate the importance of two way communication)Game 2: Dr. Tangle (Goal: to develop problem-solving skills, understand the importance of working as a team, trust and critical thinking)Game 3: Finger Shoot (Goal: feedback, reflection on the topic, checking of understanding of the topic / task)Game 4: I’ve got fire! (Goal: great way for students to present skills and abilities that they are good at)Game 5: Pro and Con Grid (Goal: helps students to develop analytical and evaluative skills)
These games take from 5 to 15 min of your lesson’s time and are incomparable to any other learning tool. This kind of learning remains in the memory and improve learning outcomes of the students.
