The City


Saint Petersburg formerly known as Petrograd and later Leningrad is the second-largest city in Russia. It is situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea with a population of approximately 5.4 million residents.
Saint Petersburg is known as the "Cultural Capital of Russia" hosting millions of tourists each year. The Historic Center of Saint Petersburg and related monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Saint Petersburg is a major trade gateway serving as the financial and industrial center of Russia with specializations in oil and gas trade, shipbuilding yards, aerospace industry and many other businesses.
In modern times the city has gained the nickname of the "Northern Capital" and serves as a home to some federal government bodies.

The University


Saint Petersburg University (SPbU) is a Russian public university founded in 1742 by a decree of Peter the Great. It is the oldest and one of the largest universities in Russia.
From the very beginning, it has had a strong focus on fundamental research in science, engineering and humanities.
It comprises 24 specialized faculties and institutes, an Academic Gymnasium and several colleges. The university has two primary campuses: one on Vasilievsky Island and the other one in Peterhof.
Saint Petersburg State University has produced a number of Nobel Prize winners and has numerous popular alumni such as the President and former Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin.
