The City

Kamloops is situated in south central British Columbia at the confluence of the two branches of the Thompson River and near Kamloops Lake. It has approx. 92,000 inhabitants.

The climate of Kamloops is a semi-arid steppe climate due to its rain shadow location. While situated in a semi-arid valley, Kamloops has winters that are generally mild and very short with an occasional cold snap where temperatures can drop to around −30 °C (−22 °F) when Arctic air floods over the Rocky Mountains into the interior.

The University

Thompson Rivers University offers students a broad range of courses, career streams, and the ability to ladder credits from diploma programs into full degrees.

TRU provides services to Aboriginal people in more remote communities. Thompson Rivers University's Aboriginal Tourism Certificate provides training in Aboriginal tourism to meet specific needs within Aboriginal communities. TRU is located in Secwepemc Territory, and over 700 self-identified Aboriginal students attend TRU.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning is one of Canada's leading distance education providers and helped found the Canadian Virtual University, operating in collaboration with other educational institutions and professional, industry, and business associations.
